AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is program developed to improve college-readiness for all students, especially those traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Often, AVID students are the first in their family to attend college.

Students in the AVID program in the MUHSD take an AVID elective course that focuses on writing and inquiry practices, college investigation and selection, organizational skills, study skills, and time management skills. Two days a week students participate in a tutorial session where they focus on areas in their academics that they are having challenges with. They receive support from their peers and college tutors in order to succeed in more rigorous classes. Additionally, as part of AVID, students usually have the opportunity to take an annual field trip to visit universities in California. They are given academic support to to complete the A-G requirements necessary to gain admission to most universities.

Students and families interested in participating in AVID should talk to their school counselor about taking this course. Please note that while AVID elective is a course available to all grade levels, students may only participate in AVID as 12th graders if they were in AVID in their 11th grade year.

More information about AVID can be found at AVID'S Website.
