MUHSD Roundup: Merced girls volleyball emerges victorious after marathon five-game match against GV
The Merced High girls volleyball team pulled out a marathon five-game victory over crosstown rival Golden Valley to improve to 1-1 in the Central California Conference on Thursday night. The Bears emerged with a 27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12 victory.
Abigail Alvarez recorded 17 kills for the Bears, who improved to 8-13 overall and 1-1 in the CCC. Nadalyn Moua added 20 assists, 17 digs and two aces and Sadie Van Dyke recorded three solo blocks and three assist blocks.
Zoe Gonzales finished with 12 kills, 22 digs, three blocks and two aces for Golden Valley (1-1 CCC). Gizzel Jordan added 34 assists, 20 digs and three aces.
El Capitan 3, Atwater 0 – Colette Collins collected six aces and 11 digs to help lead the Gauchos to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-9 victory over Atwater. The win improves El Capitan’s record to 13-7 overall and 2-0 in the CCC. Sophie Fernandez added 10 kills, nine assists, six digs and two aces for the Gauchos and Yalizbette Lua chipped in with 12 kills and two digs.
Amara Rhodes finished with seven assists, two aces and three kills to pace the Falcons (12-0, 1-1 CCC). Bella Villa added three kills and two blocks and Genesis Velasquez recorded 24 digs.
Girls Golf
El Capitan 250, Golden Valley 266 – Esther Sheu efficiently navigated her way around the course, finishing with a round of 36 to lead the Gauchos to a victory. Mady Dietz turned in a round of 44 and Lucca Jorgenson a 47 for El Capitan. Chelsea Lopez’s 47 led the Cougars.
Merced 286, Los Banos 354 – Abby Rosa carded a 51 and Katherine Dunbar turned in a 53 to pace the Bears past the Tigers.
Buhach Colony 270, Atwater 293 – Amanda Englert led the Thunder with a score of 42 and teammate Alana Hamilton turned in a 49. Paisley Garcia paced the Falcons with a 50.
Girls Tennis
Merced 9, Golden Valley 0 – The Bears improved to 2-0 in the CCC as Vasudha Shyam, Anika Gopinathan, Kaylee Villegas, JJ Cosio, Jessica Gautum and Gianna Marroquin all picked up singles wins.
El Capitan 9, Atwater 0 – The Gauchos swept the Falcons behind singles victories by Lia Garcia, Gabby Garcia, Sarah Conrad, Amberly Her, Mikayla Santiago and Emma Weber to improve to 2-0 in the CCC.
