The El Capitan High football team picks up first CCC win behind Peters’ big night.
El Capitan High running back Lorenzo Peters led the charge, rushing for 164 yards and two touchdowns as the Gauchos defeated Buhach Colony 34-7 on Friday night at Dave Honey Stadium. Peters scored on runs of 58 and 32 yards in the first quarter alone.
“It was a big emphasis tonight, we had to get him going,” said El Capitan head coach Xavier Ramirez, whose team improved to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Central California Conference. “We were hitting the outside zone, and then we just started pounding the ball inside up the middle.”
Ramirez also credited the offensive line for opening the holes for Peterson. “Our O-line, man, they really played well,” Ramirez said. “They did a really good job today getting Lorenzo into the end zone.”
The Gauchos defense came away with three turnovers, recovering two Buhach Colony fumbles and Elias Hernandez intercepting a pass. Special teams also contributed with A.J. Jones returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown.
The Gauchos other score came on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Gio Mendoza to Charles Polk. Buhach Colony dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the CCC.
Los Banos 34, Golden Valley 7 – Elijah Chiappetta returned a punt and an interception for the Tigers as they cruised to a victory over Golden Valley. Los Banos improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the CCC.
Johansen 38, Livingston 14 – The Vikings held the Wolves scoreless in the second half to pull away for the win. Roberto Rivara rushed for Livingston’s two touchdowns, scoring on runs of 3 and 55 yards. The Wolves couldn’t overcome losing four fumbles on the night.
